India's Defense Export 55 Times Growth - How India Went From Biggest Importer to Global Builder

In 2014, when any expert talked about Indian defense, they used to say one line - India is the world's biggest arms importer. India used to import everything - rifles from America, fighter jets from France and Russia, submarines from France, tanks from Russia, and even bullets and helmets from other countries. The Indian armed forces were dependent on foreign countries for 70 percent of their equipment. If there was a war, India had to worry whether foreign countries would supply spare parts or not. That old and weak India is now history. In 2026, India has achieved something that looked impossible - India's defense exports have grown by 55 times in just 10 years.

Let us look at the numbers. In the year 2013-14, India's defense exports were only 686 crore rupees. It was almost negligible. In the year 2025-26, India's defense exports have crossed 36,000 crore rupees, which is more than 4.3 billion dollars. India is now exporting defense equipment to more than 100 countries in the world, including powerful countries like America, France, Australia, and Philippines. This growth of 55 times is not just a number, it is a revolution.

The biggest reason for this revolution is the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat policy started by the government. The government made a bold decision. It made a negative import list, also called Positive Indigenization List, of more than 5,000 items that will not be imported from foreign countries anymore. This list includes everything from artillery guns, to missiles, to helicopters, to ammunition. The government told the Indian armed forces and Indian companies - if you need these items, buy them from Indian companies only.

This one decision changed everything. Indian public sector companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited, and private companies like Tata Advanced Systems, L&T, Bharat Forge, Mahindra Defence, Solar Industries, and more than 500 defense startups started working day and night to make world-class products in India.

Today, the results are in front of the whole world. India has built its own aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which is 45,000 tons, built in Cochin Shipyard with Indian steel. India is making its own Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, which is now being exported. Argentina has shown interest in buying 15 Tejas jets, and Egypt and Botswana are also in talks. India is making the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which is the fastest in the world, jointly with Russia. Philippines has already bought BrahMos for 375 million dollars, and Indonesia and Vietnam also want to buy it.

India is making the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system, which is being exported to Armenia and has performed very well in recent conflicts. India is making the Akash air defense missile system, which has been exported to many countries. India is making advanced artillery guns like ATAGS and Dhanush, which are better than many imported guns.

The most interesting part is that Indian companies are now part of the global supply chain of American and European defense giants. Tata Advanced Systems makes the fuselage of Apache attack helicopters and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters for Boeing. The Apache helicopters used by the American Army itself have parts made in India. Dynamatic Technologies makes parts for Airbus aircraft. Bharat Forge makes critical parts for artillery guns used by NATO countries.

Why do foreign countries now prefer Indian weapons? There are three reasons. First, Indian weapons are high quality but much cheaper than American or European weapons. Second, Indian weapons are battle-tested and reliable. Third, and most important, India does not put political conditions. When America sells weapons, it puts many conditions that you cannot use this weapon against certain countries. India does not do that. India believes that if you buy a weapon, you have full right to use it for your defense. This is why many countries in Africa, Middle East, and South East Asia trust India more than America.

This defense manufacturing boom has created more than 2.5 lakh direct skilled jobs and more than 10 lakh indirect jobs in India. Engineers who earlier used to dream of working in Lockheed Martin or Boeing in America are now working in HAL in Bangalore, in L&T in Pune, and in Tata in Hyderabad with very good salaries.

India's defense imports have also come down from 70 percent to just 35 percent. India now makes its own rifles. The AK-203 assault rifles are now being made in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. India makes its own bulletproof jackets, helmets, and ammunition. The money that used to go to foreign countries now stays in India and helps Indian economy.

This 55x growth is the biggest proof that India is becoming a true superpower. A superpower is not a country that buys weapons from others, a superpower is a country that makes its own weapons and sells to others. In 2014, India was a buyer. In 2026, India is a builder. By 2035, India will be one of the top 3 defense exporters in the world. This is not just economic growth, this is growth of India's self-respect and national security. Jai Hind.
