The short version

We do not require an account to read anything. We do not sell personal information. We collect the minimum needed to understand which articles people find useful and to reply when someone writes to us.

Information you give us

If you use our contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and whatever you write. We use it to reply and to keep a record of corrections. We do not add it to a marketing list.

Information collected automatically

No third-party analytics is currently active on this site. If we enable analytics in future, this policy will be updated before it goes live, and this section will name the provider and describe what is collected.

Site search

When you search this site, we record the search term and how many results it returned. This tells us what readers are looking for and are not finding. We do not store any identifier alongside it — search terms are counted, not linked to a person. Terms that look like an email address or a long number are discarded rather than stored.

Server logs

Our hosting provider keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses, for security and reliability. These are retained for a limited period and are not used to profile readers.

Cookies

We store your light/dark theme preference in your browser so the site looks the way you left it. This stays on your device and is never sent to us.

We do not currently set any analytics or advertising cookies. If that changes, this page will be updated and, where required, a consent mechanism will be added that matches the actual setup rather than a generic banner.

If you sign in to the private editorial area, a secure session cookie is set. That applies only to staff accounts, not to readers.

Advertising

We do not currently run advertising. If advertising is introduced, this policy will be updated first to describe the provider, what it collects, and what choices you have.

Who we share information with

We share information only with the service providers that operate this site — our hosting provider, and our analytics provider where one is enabled. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.

Children

This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
