BRICS New Currency? How India Is Leading De-Dollarization That Has Scared America
For the last 80 years, since the end of World War II in 1944, one single currency has ruled the world - the American Dollar. The whole world trades in dollars, oil is sold in dollars, and countries keep their reserves in dollars. If America gets angry with any country, America just bans that country from using dollars, and that country's economy collapses. America has done this with Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea. This system has given America unlimited power. But in 2026, this 80-year-old dollar system is finally breaking, and the leader of this change is not China or Russia, but India.
The group that is leading this change is BRICS. BRICS started with 5 countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Now in 2026, it has expanded and includes Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran. Together, BRICS countries represent 45 percent of world population and 35 percent of world GDP. If these countries decide to trade without dollars, the dollar's power will end.
India's strategy for de-dollarization is very smart and different from China's strategy. China wants to replace the American Dollar with the Chinese Yuan, so that China can become the new America and control the world with Yuan. India has said no to this idea. India does not want to replace one master with another master. India's idea is to create a system where countries can trade in their own local currencies, without needing dollars or Yuan.
For example, India is now buying oil from Russia and paying in Indian Rupees and Russian Rubles, not in dollars. India is buying oil from UAE and paying in Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams. India is selling rice, medicines, and engineering goods to Africa and getting paid in local African currencies. This system is called bilateral trade in local currencies, and India has already signed agreements for this with more than 25 countries.
Why is America scared of this Indian plan? Because if countries stop using dollars for trade, America will not be able to print unlimited dollars anymore. America has a national debt of 35 trillion dollars, which is more than its entire GDP. America manages this debt only because the whole world needs dollars for trade, so there is always demand for dollars. If demand for dollars falls, America will face very high inflation and its economy will suffer badly. That is why America has threatened BRICS countries that if they create a new currency, America will put 100 percent tariff on them.
But India is not scared of this threat. India's External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have calmly replied that India is not making a new currency against anyone. India is just making a system that is good for Indian exporters and importers. This is the same strategic autonomy that India showed when it continued to buy cheap Russian oil despite American pressure.
India's biggest weapon in this de-dollarization war is UPI - Unified Payments Interface. UPI is India's digital payment system that allows instant money transfer. India has linked UPI with Singapore's PayNow, UAE's payment system, France's payment system, and Russia's Mir system. Now an Indian worker in Dubai can send money to his family in India instantly through UPI without needing dollars. More than 20 countries in Africa and South America want to adopt UPI because it is cheap, fast, and does not need dollars.
In the BRICS summits in Kazan in 2024 and Rio in 2025, Prime Minister Modi proposed a BRICS payment system that will be similar to SWIFT, which is the current global payment system controlled by America and Europe. The new BRICS payment system will be controlled by BRICS countries themselves. Once it is ready, any BRICS country can send money to another BRICS country in seconds without going through America.
Many small countries trust India more than China in BRICS. When Sri Lanka had an economic crisis in 2022, India gave 4 billion dollars help in the form of food, fuel, and medicines without any conditions. China gave loans with high interest and took over Hambantota port for 99 years. So countries know who is a real friend.
The results are already visible. In 2020, 70 percent of world trade was done in dollars. In 2026, it has come down to 58 percent, the lowest in 30 years. The share of Indian Rupee in world trade has increased from 1.5 percent to 4.2 percent. The share of Chinese Yuan has also increased, but many countries are hesitant to use Yuan because they fear China's control.
This is the most important geopolitical change of our lifetime. The 80-year-old dollar empire is ending, and a new multipolar world is starting where no single currency will dominate. And in this new world, India will be one of the most important leaders because India is the only country that is friends with America, with Russia, with Europe, and with Africa at the same time. India is the bridge between the West and the Global South. That is why even though America is angry about de-dollarization, it cannot ignore India, because India is too big and too important. The future is not American, the future is not Chinese, the future is Indian. And de-dollarization is the first step towards that future. Jai Hind.
