India Is Building Its Own Silicon Valley - Dholera Chip City That Is Terrifying America and China
For the last 40 years, if anyone talked about semiconductors, only two names came to mind - Silicon Valley in America and Hsinchu in Taiwan. These two places controlled 80 percent of the world's chip production. Without chips, nothing works today - not your mobile phone, not your car, not your fighter jet, not even your refrigerator. Chips are the new oil of the 21st century. And for 40 years, India was completely dependent on other countries for chips. But in 2026, this dependence is ending, because India is building its own Silicon Valley in Dholera, Gujarat, and this project is so massive that it has terrified both America and China.
Dholera Special Investment Region is India's first greenfield smart city. It is spread over 920 square kilometers, which means it is twice the size of Singapore and almost as big as Delhi. It is located just 100 kilometers from Ahmedabad and is connected with a six-lane expressway and a dedicated freight corridor. The government has planned Dholera as a world-class city with its own international airport, metro system, and 24-hour water and electricity supply.
In the heart of Dholera, Tata Electronics in partnership with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation is building India's first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant, or fab. This fab will cost more than 91,000 crore rupees, which is about 11 billion dollars. It will produce chips from 28 nanometers to 110 nanometers. These chips may sound old compared to 3 nanometer chips used in iPhones, but these 28nm to 110nm chips are used in 70 percent of all electronic products in the world - including cars, washing machines, TVs, medical devices, defense equipment, and electric vehicles.
Why is this fab terrifying for America and China? For America, it is terrifying because America itself is struggling to build fabs. America passed the CHIPS Act with 52 billion dollars, but its factories are getting delayed and costs are very high. India is building the same factory at half the cost and in less time. Also, if chip production moves to India, which is a trusted democratic partner, America will be less dependent on Taiwan, which is under constant threat from China.
For China, this is even more terrifying. China has spent more than 150 billion dollars in the last 15 years trying to build its own chip industry, but it has failed because America and Netherlands have banned the sale of advanced ASML lithography machines to China. China cannot make advanced chips without ASML machines. But India is getting ASML machines because America and Europe trust India. So India will have the technology that China is desperate to get. This will make India more powerful than China in electronics manufacturing.
The Dholera fab will create more than 50,000 direct high-skilled jobs and more than 100,000 indirect jobs. Chip engineers will get salaries starting from 20 lakh to 50 lakh rupees per year. This will stop brain drain. Young Indian engineers who used to go to America to work in Intel, TSMC, and Samsung will now stay in India and work in Dholera. Colleges across India have already started new B.Tech courses in VLSI, semiconductor design, and chip manufacturing.
The Indian government is supporting this entire ecosystem with the India Semiconductor Mission, which has a budget of 76,000 crore rupees. Apart from Tata in Dholera, American company Micron is building a 22,000 crore chip assembly and testing plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Japanese company Renesas and American company Applied Materials are also setting up plants. So Gujarat is becoming a complete chip hub - from design in Bangalore, to manufacturing in Dholera, to testing in Sanand.
The strategic importance of this project cannot be overstated. When India makes its own chips, India can make its own fighter jets like Tejas MK2 and AMCA without depending on foreign chips. India can make its own 5G and 6G equipment without depending on China. India can make its own electric cars and batteries without depending on anyone. This is true Atmanirbhar Bharat and true national security.
In 2023, when India announced the semiconductor mission, many foreign experts laughed and said India cannot make chips, India does not have talent. In 2026, those same experts are now booking flights to Dholera to see the construction with their own eyes. The fab building is already 60 percent complete and will start production in early 2027.
Dholera is not just a factory, it is a symbol of New India's ambition. It proves that India can do what was considered impossible. The world said only America and Taiwan can make chips, India said we will also make it, and we will make it better and cheaper. The Silicon Valley of America ruled the 20th century, the Chip City of India will rule the 21st century. This is India's time, and Dholera is the proof.
